His family represents various stages of the generation gap, but all are frequently reminded of the demands and dangers of his profession. In the first episode, a divorcee imposes on his friendship when she discovers her daughter is hiding marijuana.

Chad becomes involved in the search for a runaway teenager because his daughter, Cindy, is worried about her friend. Acting more as a father than a police officer, Chad meets Lynn's wealthy parents and learns the girl cares nothing about material possessions.

Second season begins with Chad Smith loking forward to a gourmet dinner that Cindy, his daughter, is preparing for his and Betty's 21st wedding anniversary. But a bomb threat at police headquarters changes his plans.
