With five extra-base hits powering their early attack, the Athletics defeated the Royals, 6-4, to disappoint a Kansas City opening-day crowd of 18,127. Sal Bando and Don Mincher hit homers, Bert Campaneris tripled and Rick Monday rapped a triple and double, all off Wally Bunker in the first five innings.

The Royals nipped at Blue Moon Odom and forced his exit in the sixth when Bob Oliver tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Rollie Fingers took over and limited the Royals to one hit the rest of the way. [The Sporting News]
