The Cardinals' acquisition of Dick Allen from the Phillies in their search for power began paying off when the slugger smashed a homer and two doubles in a 7-2 victory over the Expos before an opening-game crowd of 21,173 at Jarry Park. After the Expos took a 2-0 lead against Bob Gibson in the first inning, Allen doubled and counted on a single by Joe Hague in the fourth, and then hit his homer to tie the score in the eighth. The Cardinals shattered the deadlock with five runs in the ninth, the final two tallies crossing the plate on Allen's second double.
