A five-run outburst in the eighth inning brought the Giants a 7-4 victory over the Astros. Ron Hunt hit a pinch-single and Willie Mays walked to open the stanza. When Bobby Bonds bunted, John Mayberry threw both late and wild in an attempted forceout at third base, Hunt scoring.

Al Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to send the Giants ahead. 4-3. Two walks and singles by Steve Whitaker and Dick Dietz helped produce three more runs before the inning ended. Dietz hit a homer with a man on base earlier in the game, while Doug Rader accounted for the Astros' last tally with a round-tripper in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
