Two errors on the same play in the first inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Mets in a duel between Dock Ellis and Jerry Koosman. Matty Alou and Bill Mazeroski drew walks to set the Pirates' scoring in motion. Roberto Clemente beat out a tap down the third base line and when Joe Foy threw wildly past first base, Alou scored.

Mazeroski also raced for home and was safe when Jerry Grote dropped the throw from right fielder Ron Swoboda. Ellis, who pitched the route, gave up five walks, three of them in the fourth when the Mets counted on a sacrifice fly by Grote. [The Sporting News]
