Bill Butler and Dave Morehead combined to pitch the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Butler gave up three hits before a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand forced him to yield the mound to Morehead with a man on base and none out in the seventh inning. Morehead gave up two hits the rest of the way.

The A's scored an unearned run in the ninth to break the club record streak of 21 shutout innings by the Royals' staff. The Royals counted twice in the first inning on a single by Pat Kelly, double by Ed Kirkpatrick and a wild pitch. Jim Campanis hit his first A.L. homer to account for the other run in the fifth.
