The slugging of Tony Perez in the first game and the hitting of Johnny Bench and Bobby Tolan in the second game featured the Reds' sweep of a doubleheader with the Giants, 6-5 and 5-2. Perez smashed two homers and two singles, driving in four runs. In the ninth inning, consecutive singles by Pete Rose, Tony Perez and Bench plated what proved to be the winning run.

In the nightcap, Tolan batted in two runs with a homer and single, while Bench accounted for two RBIs with a triple. Wayne Granger relieved in both games for the Reds and received credit for two saves. Granger retired Ron Hunt on a fly with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of the opener.
