Russ Nagelson hit his first major league homer to provide the Indians with a 2-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Yankees won the nightcap, 5-4, on a pass with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Sam McDowell, who pitched the lidlifter for the Indians, struck out 10 and raised his career total to 1,684, moving to 34th place on the all-time list. The Indians scored on a walk to Ted Uhlaender and a double by Duke Sims in the first inning and got their deciding marker when Nagelson homered in the seventh. In the nightcap, the Indians tied the score at 4-4 in the ninth with two unearned runs on a wild throw by Danny Cater with the bases loaded. In the Yankees' half, John Ellis singled and Cater and Gene Michael walked. Mike Paul then relieved Dennis Higgins and passed Ron Hansen on a 3-and-2 count to force in the winning run.
