The Reds scored all their runs in the third inning and then survived a rally by the Dodgers in the ninth to gain a 3-2 victory. Jim Merritt, who started for the Reds, was on the verge of a shutout until Manny Mota singled in the ninth and Andy Kosco homered with two out. When Wes Parker doubled, Clay Carroll replaced Merritt. A balk moved Parker to third, but Jim Lefebvre lined to Tommy Helms to end the game. Helms batted in one run with a double and Bobby Tolan drove in two with a single for the Reds.
