A grand-slam homer by Lee May, who collected a total of four hits, helped the Reds defeat the Dodgers, 12-2, with Don Gullett, a 19-year-old rookie, gaining his the first major league victory in relief of Jim Maloney. The Reds' vet starter ruptured an Achilles tendon while running out a ground ball in the third inning. Gullett walked in the fifth, Pete Rose beat out a bunt and Tommy Helms singled to score Gullett.
