Four unearned runs enabled the Pirates to defeat the Mets, 7-4. The Pirates built up a 4-0 lead with three of their tallies resulting from errors by Ron Swoboda, Bud Harrelson and Tommie Agee. Willie Stargell's first hit of the season after 22 fruitless trips drove in a run in the third inning. The Mets tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth on a triple by Cleon Jones with the bases loaded and an error.

Jerry May walked to open the seventh for the Pirates and when Jose Martinez bunted, Al Weis dropped Don Cardwell's throw to second base for the Mets' fourth error of the game. Matty Alou fouled out, but Jose Pagan and Roberto Clemente followed with run-scoring singles to send the Pirates ahead. Al Oliver wrapped up the scoring with a homer in the eighth.
