A pass to Ron Santo with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the Cubs an 8-7 victory over the Expos, who tossed away the game after rallying in the top half of the final frame to take a 7-6 lead. Johnny Callison homered with two men on base for the Cubs in the first inning.

The Expos, after trailing going into the ninth, went ahead with three runs on a pass to Marv Staehle, homer by Rusty Staub, double by Ron Fairly and single by Bobby Wine. In the Cubs' half, Jim Hickman singled and Boots Day, running for him, scored on a double by Willie Smith. Don Kessinger walked and, after two out, Billy Williams also drew a pass to load the bases and Santo walked to force in Cleo James, who ran for Smith. [The Sporting News]
