A mental lapse on the part of Davey Johnson led to the defeat of the Orioles when Danny Cater tripled with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning to give the Yanks a 4-1 victory. Horace Clarke led off the decisive stanza with a single and was on second with two out when the Orioles decided to walk Roy White intentionally. Pete Ward then grounded to Mark Belanger, who bobbled the ball momentarily before throwing to the second, but Johnson failed to cover the bag and all runners were safe. Cater followed with his triple on a looping fly into the left field corner.
