The Reds smashed five homers, including two that produced four runs in the ninth inning, to beat the Giants, 8-5. Johnny Bench and Lee May started the Reds' bombardment with consecutive homers in the fourth. After the Giants went ahead, 4-2, Angel Bravo walked in the seventh and Pete Rose tied the score with a round-tripper.

Willie McCovey put the Giants in front again by smashing a homer in the ninth. In the Reds' half, Hal McRae batted for Wayne Granger and came through with a circuit clout to tie the score.
