Pitching his the fourth straight complete game, Mickey Lolich brought his record with the Tigers to 3-1 by defeating the Red Sox, 5-1. The Tigers gave their ace lefthander his working margin in the first inning with three runs on a double by Mickey Stanley, homer by Dick McAuliffe and singles by Willie Horton, Jim Northrup and Don Wert. Al Kaline batted in the Tigers' other runs with a single in the second and a double in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
