Snapping a seven-game losing streak, the Phillies defeated the Mets, 3-2, in the 10-inning opener of a doubleheader, but the defending champions came back to win the nightcap, 10-2. The Phillies had gone scoreless against the Mets' pitching for 53 consecutive innings dating back to last September 7 before breaking the drouth in the lidlfter when Byron Browne doubled and crossed the plate on singles by Terry Harmon and Mike Ryan in the fifth. With the score tied at 1-1 in the 10th, Tony Taylor singled, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Larry Hisle. One out later, Browne walked and Johnny Briggs singled to drive in what proved to be the deciding run, enabling the Phillies to withstand a homer by Joe Foy in the Mets' half.

The Mets won the nightcap with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, four runs scored on a walk, hit batsman, another walk and a wild pitch.
