The Astros got one-hit pitching from Tom Griffin and defeated the Padres, 5-1. A tremendous catch by Jim Wynn deprived Cito Gaston of a hit in the fourth inning, but on his next trip in the seventh, Gaston lined a double to right-center field for the Padres' lone safety.

Griffin gave up a run in the first wthout a hit when Jose Arcia walked, stole second and scored on a pair of infield outs. The Astros tied the score with singles by Tommy Davis, Wynn and Denis Menke in their half and went ahead with two runs in the second on a pass to Doug Rader, forceout by Johnny Edwards, triple by Joe Morgan and single by Davis. John Mayberry stole home in the eighth and the Astros added other run in that same stanza on a pass with the bases loaded. [The Sporting News]
