Willie Stargell, going into the game with an .037 average on one hit in 27 times at bat, walloped a tape-measure homer with a man on base in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a 3-1 victory over the Astros. Stargell also accounted for the Pirates' first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. His homer, after a walk to Richie Hebner and forceout by Roberto Clemente, cleared the right-field roof at Forbes Field and was only the 17th time that batting feat had been accomplished since the park was opened in 1909.
