A tremendous homer by Frank Howard, who smashed the ball an estimated 510 feet, broke a 3-3 tie in the third inning and sent the Senators on the way to a 5-3 victory over the Angels. Lee Maye also homered for the Nats, connecting with two men on base in the first, but the Angels got two runs back on a bases-loaded single by Jim Fregosi in the second and pulled even when Roger Repoz hit for the circuit in the third.

Howard was thrown out of the game in the fifth for arguing a called third strike, marking only his second banishment in 775 A. L. contests. [The Sporting News]
