Three unearned runs that resulted from a wild throw by Cesar Tovar with the bases loaded in the third inning proved the difference when the Tigers defeated the Twins, 8-6. Tovar's error came on an apparent double-play ball hit by Jim Northrup and cleared the bases. Northrup then scored himself on a single by Bill Freehan.

Dick McAuliffe led off the game with a homer in the first when the Tigers counted twice. Brant Alyea batted in four runs for the Twins with a pair of doubles. After a walk and a triple by Tovar in the fourth, the Twins tied the score with a homer by Harmon Killebrew in the fifth.
