A homer by Reggie Smith for his the third hit of game broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and lifted the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Athletics. Smith tripled and scored in the first and singled to set up another run in the third. Back-to-back doubles by Rico Petrocelli and George Scott added a marker for the Red Sox in the seventh.
