Jesus Alou, who was not in the starting lineup after starring at bat in the previous night's game, came up as a pinch-hitter in the tenth inning and delivered a payoff single as the Astros defeated the Cardinals, 5-3. Joe Hague and Dick Allen homered for the Cardinals. In the tenth, Joe Morgan doubled for the Astros and scored the tie-breaking run on Alou's single.
