The Padres, who had never defeated the Mets previously in San Diego since entering the N. L. in 1969, losing seven straight games, finally turned the trick with a 5-4 victory.

The Padres scored four of their runs in the second inning. Doubles by Nate Colbert and Ollie Brown, together with a single by Ed Spiezio, accounted for the first two tallies. After Chris Cannizzaro singled, Don Cardwell replaced Jim McAndrew and two more runs counted on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Campbell.
