Denny Lemaster, who had a 3-0 record against the Cardinals last season, continued his mastery with an 8-1 victory to give the Astros a split of a doubleheader. The Cardinals won the first game, 7-4.

Jerry Johnson, recalled from Tulsa (American Association), made his first appearance in a St. Louis uniform in the lidlifter and saved the victory for Nelson Briles with three innings of one-hit relief. Lou Brock and Leron Lee homered for the Cardinals, Brock's round-tripper coming on an inside-the-park drive with two men on base. Denis Menke homered for the Astros. In the nightcap, the Astros backed Lemaster with a 15-hit attack, including a circuit clout by Johnny Edwards with two aboard. [The Sporting News]
