With Cito Gaston in the key role, the Padres defeated the Mets, 4-3, in the 10-inning opener of a doubleheader, but the defending world champions came back to win the nightcap, 3-2. Gaston homered in the fourth inning of the lidlifter and then batted in the winning run with a single in the tenth. Chris Cannizzaro beat out an infield hit to start the overtime stanza, Dave Campbell sacrificed and, after an intentional pass to Steve Huntz, Gaston singled.

Tommie Agee, who batted safely in his 15th straight game, singled for the Mets in the seventh inning of the nightcap and scored the winning run on a double by Joe Foy. [The Sporting News]
