The pitching and hitting of Lowell Palmer earned a star's designation for the reliever as the Phillies defeated the Giants, 13-6, to complete a sweep of a doubleheader after winning the first game, 8-6, in 13 innings. Willie Mays and Bobby Bonds homered in the seventh inning of the lidlifter to put the Giants ahead, 6-2, but Deron Johnson came through with a pinch-homer for the Phillies with two men on base in the eighth and Jim Hutto hit his first major league homer to tie score in the ninth. Johnny Briggs broke the deadlock with a circuit clout in 13th and Tony Taylor later drove in another run with a single to clinch the decision.

In the nightcap, the Giants scored five runs and kayoed Woodie Fryman with one out in the first inning. Palmer, who had pitched two hitless innings in the opener, returned to the mound and checked the Giants on four hits and one the run rest of the way. The Phillies tied the score with a five-run outburst in the second, including a double by Palmer. Palmer singled and scored in the fourth and then doubled with the bases loaded, driving in three runs, when the Phillies counted six times in the fifth. [The Sporting News]
