His ability to bunt paid off for Tommy John when the lefthander traveled the route for the first time this season and pitched the White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Indians in a game marked by a total of nine double plays, tying the major league record for two clubs. The Indians executed five. After Bobby Knoop singled in the third inning, a sacrifice by John and single by Tommy McCraw produced the first run for the White Sox. After Knoop was hit by a pitch in the fifth, John again bunted successfully and Luis Aparicio followed with a single to drive in the deciding run. [The Sporting News]
