Clutch relief in the ninth by Pete Richert enabled Dave McNally to gain his fifth victory when the Orioles defeated the Royals, 3-1. McNally was lifted with one out after the Royals scored their run on singles by Paul Schaal and Bob Oliver and a double by Lou Piniella. With the tying runs on base, Richert struck out Mike Fiore and retired Luis Alcaraz on a grounder. Brooks Robinson, who collected four hits, scored two of the Orioles' runs.
