Mel Stottlemyre received credit for the 100th victory of his A. L. career when the Yanks defeated the Athletics, 7-6. The Yankees, facing former teammate Al Downing for the first time, scored on a pass with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and then exploded for six runs in the fifth. Roy White batted in two runs with a double. Two runs also scored on a wild pitch by reliever Roberto Rodriguez. Don Mincher and Rick Monday hit two-run homers for the A's.
