Hank Aaron homered with a man on base in the first inning to start the Braves off to a 3-0 victory over the Pirates behind the pitching of Phil Niekro. Aaron also singled in the sixth for the 2,988th hit of his career, moving him into ninth place on the all-time list ahead of Sam Rice. Aaron then stole second and scored on a double by Rico Carty.
