Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Billy Cowan drove in two runs with a single to bring the Angels a 4-2 victory over the Senators. Frank Howard and Rick Reichardt hit homers to produce the Senators' runs. The Angels picked up their first run in the seventh on a triple by Joe Azcue and infield out by Jay Johnstone.

Jim Fregosi singled in the eighth and scored with one out on a double by Jim Spencer. The Senators passed Ken McMullen intentionally and got the second out when Jarvis Tatum forced Spencer at third, but Aurelio Rodriguez then booted a grounder by Azcue, loading the bases and setting the stage for Cowan's winning hit.
