The Cubs' streak of 10 victories at home this season was snapped with a 5-2 loss to the Reds. The defeat was the sixth in a row for the Cubs, who came off a road trip with five straight losses, while the Reds posted their eighth victory in succession. The Reds, after taking a 2-1 lead, gained their decision with three runs in the seventh inning on a single by Lee May, homer by Bernie Carbo, single by Dave Concepcion, sacrifice by Jim McGlothlin and double by Pete Rose.
