Willie Mays lighted the candles with two homers as Migel Puente celebrated his 22nd birthday by pitching the Giants past the Mets, 7-1, for his first major league victory.

Mays, who had not hit two homers in a game since September 14, 1968, drove a pitch out of the park in the first inning and then connected again with a man on base in the sixth. Bobby Bonds also homered for the Giants, while a round-tripper by Ken Boswell in the eighth prevented Puente from posting a shutout. [The Sporting News]
