. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Ernie Banks hit the 500th homer of his career and with it reached the 1,600 mark in runs batted in as the Cubs defeated the Braves in 11 innings, 4-3. Banks, who belted his homer in the second inning, also lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh for RBI no. 1,601. However, the Cubs faced a 3-2 deficit until Billy Williams tied the score with a homer in the ninth.

In the 11th, Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert singled, Williams was handed an intentional pass and Ron Santo drove in the winning run with a scratch hit on a grounder that bounced away from Sonny Jackson at shortstop. Rico Carty had three singles for the Braves and extended his batting streak to 30 games. [The Sporting News]
