With only two hits in the rally, the Angels scored four runs in the ninth inning and beat the Red Sox, 6-5. George Scott hit a two-run single and Tony Conigliaro homered with a man on base to lift the Red Sox to the top, 5-2, before the Angels staged their outburst.

Jarvis Tatum drew a walk to open the ninth. Jim Fregosi was nicked by a pitch and Alex Johnson blooped a single to load the bases. A pass to Ken McMullen forced in one run and another counted on a sacrifice fly by Jim Spencer. When Johnson was caught off third base on a grounder by Bill Voss, McMullen moved to third and Voss advanced to second on the play.
