. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Helped by four errors, the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 11-7, in a game described by coach Bill Virdon of Bucs as the "worst I've ever seen -- on our part." The Cards, who scored five unearned runs, took a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning on a homer by Dick Allen, three-run double by Vic Davalillo and single by Jose Cardenal.

Willie Stargell, who hit two homers for the Pirates, tied the count by hitting for the circuit with a man on on base in the seventh. The Cardinals broke away with four runs in the eighth. A pass to Jerry Johnson, a sacrifice, and a single by Lou Brock produced the tie-breaking tally. After two walks loaded the bases, Joe Hague drove in two runs with a single. Joe Torre also scored on the play that wound up with Hague being thrown out at third. [The Sporting News]
