Homers by Jay Johnstone and Jim Fregosi, together with a pair of run-scoring singles by Jim Spencer, helped the Angels defeat the Athletics, 5-4. Spencer batted in the Angels' first run in the third inning and Alex Johnson homered in the fourth. Fregosi led off the seventh with his circuit clout. After singles by Roger Repoz, Johnson and Spencer added another run, Johnson was picked off base, but Spencer advanced to second on the play and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Joe Azcue. Dave Duncan batted in two runs for the A's with a bases-loaded single and Don Mincher hit a homer.
