. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Managers Leo Durocher and Red Schoendienst both lifted their pitchers in the midst of a scoreless duel in moves that failed for one and paid off for the other when the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 1-0. Durocher removed Joe Decker when the Cubs had men on first and third with two out in the seventh inning, but pinch-hitter Paul Popovich grounded into a forceout.

With Phil Regan ptiching in the Cardinals' half, Joe Hague singled and Mike Shannon, starting his first game this season after being sidelined by a kidney aliment, beat out a bunt. Phil Gagliano popped up trying to sacrifice and Vic Davalillo, batting for Mike Torrez, forced Shannon, but Jose Cardenal came through with a single to drive in the game's only run. Billy McCool, in relief of Torrez, completed the shutout and gained his first save in a Cardinal uniform. [The Sporting News]
