. . . where the 1970s live forever!

After being collared in four trips in the first game, Hank Aaron singled in the first inning of the second game for the 3,000th hit of his career, but the Braves lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Reds, 5-1 and 7-6, with the nightcap going 15 innings. The Reds took charge of the opener by scoring three times in the fifth inning. A double by Jimmy Stewart, single by Jim Merritt and sacrifice fly by Pete Rose tied the game at 1-1. Bobby Tolan, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench followed with singles for two more runs. Rose and Perez wrapped it up with homers in the seventh.

Aaron drove in a run with his single in the nightcap and also homered with a man on base in the third inning. With the help of a circuit clout by Rose, the Reds came back to tie the count at 3-3. The Braves appeared to have won the game after scoring three runs in the 10th, but the Reds forged a new deadlock when Perez singled and Bench and Lee May hit successive homers. In the 15th, Dave Concepcion singled and Angel Bravo sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Rose, Don Gullett crossed up the Braves with a single to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
