The relief work of Chuck Taylor, who pitched out of trouble in the ninth inning, enabled the Cardinals to gain a 3-2 victory over the Astros. Taylor relieved after Doug Rader drew a walk. An error by Julian Javier and a single by Norm Miller then produced a run for the Astros, but Taylor retired the next three batters.

Jim Wynn hit three doubles for the Astros and batted in their first run, but grounded into a forceout to end the game. Dick Allen drove in the Cardinals' first run with a single in the fourth. Dal Maxvill walked in the sixth, Allen doubled and Joe Torre drove them home with a single for the deciding hit. [The Sporting News]
