Don Wert homered with a man on base for the Tigers in the first game and Merv Rettenmund hit a similar blow for the Orioles in the second game to provide the winning margins in a split of a twi-night doubleheader, with the Tigers taking the opener, 6-4, and the Orioles winning the nightcap, 3-1. Wert's wallop capped a five-run outburst in the seventh inning as the Tigers shattered a 1-1 tie. Rettenmund and Paul Blair hit homers in a losing cause for the Orioles.

Rettenmund was on the bench to start the nightcap, but entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and singled, leading to the Orioles' first run. Then, in the ninth, Rettenmund came up with a man on base and hit his winning homer. [The Sporting News]
