Dick Allen, returning to Philadelphia for the first time, smashed a homer to help rally the Cardinals, but the Phillies broke a tie in the ninth inning to gain a 4-3 victory and pin the defeat on Frank Linzy, who made his debut in a Redbird uniform. Steve Carlton, who started for the Cards, struck out 16 in eight innings, but the Phillies took a 3-0 lead against the lefthander in the sixth on a safe bunt by Tony Taylor, a triple by Larry Hisle and homer by Don Money. In the ninth, Allen hit his homer with a man on base and the Cardinals then tied the score with a walk and singles by Carl Taylor and Joe Hague. However, in the Phillies' half, Johnny Briggs got a scratch infield hit off Linzy and Byron Browne sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Mike Compton, Billy McCool came in and struck out Jim Hutto. The Cards next called on Sal Campisi, but the pitching change failed when Tony Taylor singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News] |
