Jim McGlothlin singled in the eighth inning and scored the tie-breaking run to help himself to victory as the Reds nipped the Padres, 2-1. Lee May homered for the Reds' first run in the second inning. McGlothlin, who had pitched two straight shutouts, was foiled in his bid for a third when Cito Gaston homered for the Padres in the fourth. After hitting his single in the eighth, McGlothlin took third on a single by Pete Rose and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Tolan.
