Gil Garrido and Orlando Cepeda smashed homers in the second inning when the Braves exploded for six runs to defeat the Astros, 8-1. Phil Niekro, who pitched a five-hitter for the Braves, opened the second with a single and Garrido followed with his first major league homer. Hits by Felix Millan, Hank Aaron and Rico Carty added another run before Cepeda connected for the circuit to add three more. The Astros averted a shutout when Joe Pepitone homered in the fourth.
