The Yankees broke away with three runs after two men were out in the first inning and stayed ahead of the Tigers to win, 4-2. Bobby Murcer drew a walk and counted the first run on singles by Roy White and Danny Cater. White reached third on the hit by Cater, who took second on the throw to the plate.
