Shut out on two hits over the first seven innings, the Red Sox picked up a run in the eighth and rallied for three more in the ninth to beat the White Sox, 4-3. Bill Melton hit a double and a homer to pace the White Sox. The first Red Sox run counted on a single by Carl Yastrzemski, a wild pitch by Tommy John and a sacrifice fly by Rico Petrocelli.

Luis Alvarado walked to open the ninth. Wilbur Wood, replacing John, yielded a pinch-single by Jose Santiago and passed Mike Andrews to load the bases.
