Sam McDowell pitched a two-hitter and was the winner in a duel with Blue Moon Odom when the Indians scored two unearned runs on errors by Bert Campaneris to defeat the Athletics, 2-1. Odom, who yielded four hits, was the loser on his 25th birthday.

The Indians scored initially in the third inning on a single by Jack Heidemann, a sacrifice, an error by Campaneris and an infield out by Eddie Leon. The A's run came on a homer by Joe Rudi in the fourth. Ray Fosse grounded to Campaneris in the seventh and reached second on the shortstop's wild throw. After advancing on a passed ball, Fosse scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Heidemann. [The Sporting News]
