Tom Seaver was handed his third straight defeat when the Astros shut out the Mets, 5-0, behind the combined three-hit pitching of Tom Griffin and Jack Billingham. Griffin was hit on the right elbow by a batted ball with two out in fifth inning, forcing him to leave the mound in favor of Billingham.

The Astros ripped into Seaver for four runs in the fifth. Doug Rader opened the outburst with a homer. Singles by Johnny Edwards and Jesus Alou, around a sacrifice, added another counter. Joe Morgan then walked and Jim Wynn drove in two more runs with a double. Wynn climaxed the scoring with a homer in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
