Dock Ellis, who pitched a six-hitter, also reached base twice with a single and forceout, stole one base and scored two runs to take an all-around role in the Pirates' 5-1 victory over the Padres. Ellis' single, a double by Matty Alou and sacrifice flies by Gene Alley and Willie Stargell produced two runs for the Pirates in the third inning.

The Padres picked up their tally in the fourth on singles by Steve Huntz and Ollie Brown, around a wild pitch, but the Pirates iced the decision with three runs in the seventh. Ellis, after forcing Richie Hebner, stole second and scored on Alou's second double of the game. [The Sporting News]
