The Padres set a club record for the most hits in a nine-inning game, smashing 19, and beat the Pirates in a slugfest, 14-8. The Pirates had 16 hits.

The Padres kayoed Bob Veale in the first inning, a double by Ollie Brown and singles by Tommy Dean and Gary Ross each driving in two runs. Cito Gaston homered with a man on base in the second. Steve Huntz drove in a pair with a double in the third. Chris Cannizzaro, Dean and Jose Arcia hit triples in another two-run burst by the Padres in the fifth.
